FAQs

How much does refacing cost?

As you might expect, it depends on your kitchen’s size, the scope of your project, and your specific design selections. But in general, American Wood Reface provides a high level of quality — similar to custom cabinetry — for as little as half the cost.

Plus, refacing comes with fewer surprises and a lot less hassle, so after your free in-home estimate, you’ll know the exact cost for your kitchen project.

What are the benefits of refacing?

  1. Saves time: Refacing cabinets is quicker than tearing out and replacing cabinets.
  2. Saves money: Both in hours billed and materials.
  3. Less mess and disruption: Your home and family are disturbed very little during the refacing process.
  4. Less wasted materials, fewer unforeseen problems to fix.

American Wood Reface’s premium ¼” solid wood refacing has additional benefits over refacing with other materials:

  1. Improved quality: Grade of materials comparable to fine furniture.
  2. Increased value: More bang for your buck in resale value.
  3. Greater functionality: Modern features and conveniences are easily added

Should I paint or reface my kitchen cabinets?

Painting your cabinets freshens up the existing look of your kitchen cabinetry, but refacing gives your kitchen an entirely new appearance, feel, and presence! While painting tends to be the cheaper of the two, painted cabinets have the following disadvantages:

  1. You are stuck with your existing door style.
  2. You cannot make functional or design changes to improve your kitchen.
  3. Heavily grained woods (e.g. oak) often still show grain after painting.
  4. Brushstrokes are often visible.
  5. The durability of latex paint is far less than that of a catalyzed conversion finish applied in a professional spray booth, as is done with our refacing projects.
  6. Painting cabinets does not increase home’s resale value as do cabinets refaced with solid wood.

My drawer boxes are in bad shape, what can be done about them?

One of the most common upgrades is to replace drawer boxes with dovetail constructed, full-extension, soft-close drawer boxes. Plus converting lower cabinets to drawer banks to improve access is a great option that we offer.

Do I have to replace my countertops with refacing?

No, you do not. That is one of the benefits of refacing. If you have existing tops that you love, you can keep them in place.

I would like to replace my countertops with my kitchen remodel. Why should I use American Wood Reface for that part of the project?

If you don’t like your countertops, replacing them with a refacing project is ideal. Allowing American Wood Reface to replace your countertops gives us the ability to adjust for any inconsistencies that may occur with new countertops.

For instance, if a floor is replaced, resulting in a lower countertop height, we are able to raise countertops to standard height (preventing the dishwasher from being trapped and making your kitchen ergonomically correct). Also, when countertops are replaced, shims are sometimes necessary for proper installation. With the refacing process, we are able to cover the height adjustment and oversize the drawer fronts so the correction will not be visible.

In addition, about half of our refacing projects involve countertop replacement so we can offer new countertops at very competitive prices.

How long does refacing take?

Project completion can vary from about one week for a typical project to up to several weeks for a larger project with more complex challenges and extensive scope. This is a tremendous time savings over traditional cabinet-replacement kitchen remodeling.

What kind of materials do you use for kitchen refacing?

American Wood Reface replaces doors and drawer fronts with select grade, solid hardwood finished with premium catalyzed conversion varnish. Cabinet faces are refaced with ¼” thick solid hardwood.

The level of quality you’ll find in a kitchen by American Wood Reface is on par with premium custom cabinetry (or in some very high-end stock options). We are typically as little as half of the cost of equivalent-quality new cabinetry.

Do you offer custom woods or finishes?

We have a very extensive line of woods, stains, and solid colors. However, if you have something unique in mind (e.g. an exotic wood like Ambrosia Maple or a custom color), we can match it. Just give us a call to discuss your dream.

Can you add cabinets to my existing layout or extend cabinets to the ceiling?

Yes, absolutely! And we can also modify existing cabinets to increase space and improve accessibility, as well as to fit new appliances.

Can you convert my cabinets to full overlay when refacing?

Most of the time, yes. Since all the doors are new and custom made to fit, we can adjust their sizes to reduce the reveal (or gaps) between the doors and drawer fronts in your current kitchen, resulting in a much more upscale, streamlined look.

My kitchen layout is awkward so I want to move the stove to a different spot and lift my microwave off the counter. Plus I need a larger refrigerator for my growing family. I guess refacing won’t work for me?

Wrong! Refacing is a perfect option for you. Our skilled carpenters are able to modify nearly any cabinet to accommodate new functions and change their shapes or sizes in many cases. We can reconfigure existing cabinets, add cabinets, extend cabinets, reduce cabinets, rework cabinets for an appliance, change the layout, install features to increase access and storage space, and even solve the ‘corner cabinet’ problem. If you’ve dreamed it, trust us, we’ve done it! We are happy to show you many examples from our past projects.

Do you offer free in-home estimates?

Yes. Our free in-home consultation not only provides you with a firm estimate of your project’s cost but gives you a consultation with one of our kitchen design specialists who can advise you and provide suggestions and options that you may not have thought of. They are full of great ideas to help you achieve your dream kitchen.

Are contracts fixed price or cost plus and do you have a material escalation clause?

As long as the scope of the project does not change, the cost of your project remains fixed. American Wood Reface projects do NOT have material price escalation clauses. We honor the price quoted even if material costs rise after the contract is signed.

Do you reface bathrooms?

We only offer bathroom cabinet refacing for past clients or concurrently with a full kitchen reface project. We also work with homeowners if they have projects that include multiple bathrooms where cabinet replacement isn’t viable.

Do you offer other services that are typically done with a kitchen remodel?

Services vary by market but can include new countertops, wall tile, undercabinet lighting, and new cabinetry along with refacing. Give us a call to discuss services offered in your area.

Do you replace flooring or paint walls?

No, but we are happy to recommend a professional, if needed.

How long have you been in business?

We have been in business since 1979. In the early nineties, we began focusing on kitchen refacing, and now we offer that exclusively.

Outside of kitchens, what other remodeling services (e.g. windows, siding) does American Wood Reface offer?

None. Because we believe that to be the best you need to specialize and that is what we choose to do. With thousands of refacing projects finished, our carpenters are experts at their craft. They work their magic all day, every day, all year long, beautifying kitchens… rather than in between doing other types of work.

I had another reface company come out already. They used laminate. Will you be more expensive than them since you use solid wood?

We have seen quite a bit of variability in other companies’ pricing practices. We have fewer middlemen, and as a result, we often find that our prices are lower than our competitors. For example, many big box stores do not do the refacing themselves, but, instead, they collect a large percentage from another contractor, which causes the price to be higher even when using lower quality material.

Do you have a showroom?

Fixed showroom availability varies by region. In all areas, we bring the showroom to you at no charge!

Our kitchen specialists carry samples of doors, woods, stains, colors, countertops, etc., so you can view and select products in the comfort of your own home. Plus, you can find complementing and coordinating options within your existing design décor without leaving your home.

Give us a call to find out if there is a fixed showroom in your area.

How soon can I expect a call back from a kitchen specialist?

You can expect a call within 1-2 business days.

Is it worth it to reface kitchen cabinets?

Remodeling your kitchen can be expensive but historically it offers one of the best returns on investment. Refacing kitchen cabinets can save you money vs. replacing. The kitchen cabinets are a significant part of your kitchen’s look, and replacing them can take up half of the entire remodeling budget.

How long does refacing kitchen cabinets last?

You can expect a refacing project to last as long as a solid wood custom kitchen will last.
