A Historic City
The city of Beaufort, currently the county seat of Beaufort County, is the second-oldest city in South Carolina, having been chartered in 1711.
Beaufort is located on one of the Sea Islands (a chain of barrier islands that run along the Atlantic Coast of the United States) that lies within the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Beaufort had a notable role in the American Revolutionary War, the Civil War and the Reconstruction Era that followed it. The Battle of Beaufort in 1779 was a victory for the Americans, as it saw them take fewer casualties than their British opponents.
During the Civil War, one result of the Battle of Port Royal in November 1861 was the occupation of Beaufort by Union Forces. And today, Beaufort County hosts the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park.
Historic Beaufort is renowned for its antebellum architecture and the Beaufort Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places.
