The City on a Ridge
First, a quick naming history.
The town known today as Ridgeland South Carolina was not, in fact, always known as Ridgeland. In its earliest days, Ridgeland was called “Gopher Hill.”
You could be forgiven for thinking that it acquired this name thanks to the familiar rodent, but this is not actually the case.
No, today’s “Ridgeland” was once “Gopher Hill” thanks to the gopher tortoise, which is native to the area.
The gopher tortoise is a noble creature, a keystone species whose burrows provide shelter for other animals, making it an outsized positive player in its ecosystem.
Despite, we presume, the best lobbying efforts of the tortoise, when the town got a new railroad station, its existing name was changed to Ridgeland. This happened in 1902, and the Ridgeland name was picked due to the town’s location on a sandy ridge.
The ridge that Ridgeland occupies is, for Jasper County, high land. It is a real testament to just how close to sea level the Lowcountry is when you consider the fact that the center of Ridgeland (a relatively high place) is just 62 feet above sea level!
In addition to its placement on the ridge, Ridgeland is also the county seat of Jasper County, though parts of Ridgeland extend into neighboring Beaufort County.
Ridgeland has held the county seat distinction since the 1912 creation of Jasper County.
