A Historic Village
The Piedmont Triad community of Clemmons wasn’t officially incorporated as a village until 1986. North Carolina allows for municipalities to incorporate as cities, towns, or villages, and Clemmons chose to call itself a village.
But just because the Village of Clemmons didn’t make itself “official” until 1986, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a rich history. Clemmons, in fact, can reach all the way back to the start of the 19th century to tell its story.
In 1802, the village’s namesake, Peter Clemmons, first settled in the area. (Interestingly, the settlement was originally known as “Clemmonsville.”)
One of the symbols of the Village of Clemmons is a stagecoach, in recognition of the village’s importance to the stagecoach routes of the 1800s.
Edwin T. Clemmons, one of the descendants of Peter Clemmons, grew a prominent stagecoach business in the area.
Today, in the Village Hall in Clemmons, visitors can view a restored historic stagecoach known as the “Hattie Butner,” named for the wife of Edwin T. Clemmons.
