Held in High Esteem
Greensboro is the most populous city in North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad, also serving as the county seat of Guilford County. Established in 1808, Greensboro was named for Nathanael Greene, a major general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
One of the most notable battles in the Revolution’s Southern theater was contested on land that is now in Greensboro. The Battle of Guilford Court House took place in March of 1781, and pitted Greene against the British Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis.
Though the British won the battle, the American forces inflicted heavy losses upon them, and Cornwallis would eventually surrender at Yorktown in October of that same year.
You can visit Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, which commemorates this important battle, in Greensboro today.
