Much to Celebrate
Lexington North Carolina, located in the Piedmont Triad, was incorporated as a city in 1828. European settlement in the area, however, dates back earlier than that, at least into the 1770s.
In fact, a significant event that occurred in 1775 helped inspire the name that Lexington residents chose for their community. The Battles of Lexington and Concord took place in that year, setting off the sparks that became the American Revolution.
To honor this famed event and the community that helped change history, the residents of what is now Lexington North Carolina embraced and adopted the name of one of these illustrious towns.
But Lexington North Carolina has made its own way in the world and done much to honor this acclaimed moniker.
Lexington proudly proclaims itself to be the “Barbeque Capital of the World,” thanks in part to hosting the Lexington Barbeque Festival, an annual event held in the town every October that has been known to draw as many as 200,000 cuisine-minded visitors.
A public art installation known as “Pigs in the City” was possibly inspired by the status Lexington has as a center for fine barbeque. This initiative involves local artists adorning the town with humorous, life-sized, decorated sculptures of pigs, mostly rendered in fiberglass.
